Recovery from co-dependency/co-addiction is a process. It begins with identifying feelings and behaviors and their origins with a therapist. Individuals can then develop healthier coping mechanisms to bring healing.
Feelings of fear, anxiety, shame, an overwhelming need to control, neglecting ourselves and focusing on others are characteristics that may suddenly emerge when something harmless reminds us of a traumatic experience. The individual may or may not be conscious of the traumatic experience which can be 'crazy making'.
When partners are deeply impacted by the behaviors of the addict, and specifically their spouse’s betrayal(s) of their trust, they feel embarrassed and distressed, and find very few if any people they can confide in about their pain.
