Therapy begins with an assessment which helps the person decide if indeed there is a problem with addiction. Once the person maintains recovery from addiction, they can address underlying issues. Central to your therapy will be to address the cycle of addiction, distorted thinking, relapse prevention, triggers, and consequences that impede healthy decision-making. Underlying causes, prior traumas, and losses often rooted in early primary relationships are explored throughout the therapy experience.
For Sex Addicts:
Tools such as the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST-R) are used to assist in the assessment of sexually compulsive or “addictive” behavior. The SAST-R provides a profile of responses, which help to discriminate between addictive and nonaddictive behavior.
The 'Facing the Shadow' and 'Recovery Zone' workbooks by Dr.Patrick Carnes are used throughout therapy to help individuals break the cycle of addiction, maintain recovery and achieve long term goals.
For Partners of Sex Addicts:
Therapy begins with meeting one-on-one to address acute crisis concerns following the discovery/disclosure of your partner's sexual addiction. The initial focus of therapy is addressing non-negotiables for immediate safety concerns, self-care, and development of a support system where exploration and validation of your experiences can occur. Once crisis from the addiction is resolved, ongoing treatment centers on maladaptive coping skills, also referred to as codependency, that interfere with self-care and healthy interpersonal relationships. Underlying causes, prior traumas, and losses often rooted in early primary relationships are explored throughout the therapy experience.
'Facing Heartbreak' by Stefanie Carnes, Mari A. Lee, and Anthony Rodriguez is used in therapy as a guide for recovery.
For Couples:
One of the prerequisites of couples counseling is that the individuals have a minimum of one year of individual therapy. The initial assessment helps determine what the couple needs to address:
- has there been disclosure?
- are boundaries respected?
- honest communication
- healthy sexuality
- intimacy/emotional connection
- rebuilding trust/acceptance
